Jia Li Ming

After seven years as a "penguin daddy" nurturing his daughter during her early years, Jia Lao Shi became a promoter of children's Chinese reading and a writer of children's Chinese storybooks.

His publications include:

  • "Grandpa and Grandma"

  • "Everyone is a Fire-Breathing Dragon"

  • "'No' Mom, 'No Problem' Dad"

  • "First Time at a Hawker Centre"

  • "Future Dream Singapore"

Among them, "Grandpa and Grandma" was shortlisted for the 2017 Singapore Readers' Choice Book Award and won the Best Cover Award; "'No' Mom, 'No Problem' Dad" was shortlisted for the 2018 Singapore Readers' Choice Book Award; and "First Time at a Hawker Centre" was shortlisted for the 2019 Singapore Readers' Choice Book Award.

Committed to the promotion of mother-tongue reading, Jia Lao Shi has held seminars relating to parent-child reading and parent-child education for parents and story-introduction sessions for students at many schools and organizations. These include:

  • In August 2017, he gave a lecture on "Promoting Mother-Tongue Reading in a Bilingual Environment" at the 6th Mother Tongue Forum.

  • In May 2017, he shared "How to Stimulate Children's Interest in Reading" at the Chinese Development Assistance Council.

  • In March 2017, he gave a lecture for parents at the National Library on "Family Education and Self-Development in Picture Books".

  • In the image of "Superman Daddy", Jia Lao Shi had volunteered as a Chinese storyteller at his daughter's school for two years.

  • For two years since 2015, he had been a Chinese storytelling volunteer for the "Little Book Fan Club" at Pasir Ris National Library.
